Adult SULAM presents the Israeli Film: Lemon Tree (Eytz Limon) followed by dessert and discussion. Free and open to all. Click here for more information on the movie: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/17/movies/17lemo.html?_r=0
Widow and empty nester Salma Zidane lives in a small house on the West Bank flanked by lemon trees planted by her great grandparents. When the Israeli minister of defense builds a house adjacent to her own, her lemon trees are deemed a security risk. Salma hires a lawyer to prevent the powerful man from having her ancestral trees removed, but the odds are stacked against her and, to make matters worse, she begins to fall in love with her lawyer. Things seem bleak, but a ray of hope shines forth in the form of minister’s neglected wife who develops sympathy for Salma’s plight.
After screening the movie, we will discuss the implications of the film as they relate to the ever changing sociopolitical landscape in Israel today. We are so often inundated with news updates about the “Israeli-Palestinian conflict” as though it were a two-sided debate. Lemon Tree expertly shows us that there are, in fact, infinitely more sides to the conflict than meets the eye.
