B'nai Mitzvah

B'nai Mitzvah is a wonderful rite of passage in the Jewish tradition. At TCS we affirm that:
♦ B'nai Mitzvah should be a meaningful ceremony for each of our students.
♦ B'nai Mitzvah should be an opportunity to solidify years of study and practice.
♦ B'nai Mitzvah should be a joyous event for the entire family.
♦ B'nai Mitzvah should highlight the skills of each individual.
B'nai Mitzvah should fall as close to one's 13th birthday in accordance with Jewish tradition.

B'nai Mitzvah will be celebrated on Shabbat morning as part of our congregational Shabbat Service. In order to be eligible to celebrate a Bar/Bat Mitzvah at TCS, a student must be in good standing in our school and in compliance with Temple Chayai Shalom's financial policy.

B'nai Mitzvah dates are assigned in 5th grade, and all students are assigned to a date together with a classmate. This means two students, at comparable levels, will celebrate B'nai Mitzvah on the same day at the same service. Students will receive a booklet which will have up-to-date policies and procedures, to which the family should refer going forward.

Once the date assignments have been made, if there are dates on which only one student is assigned, then there will be a lottery that families can enter for these "single" dates. The lottery may result in some dates with only one child assigned. However, these "singles" are not guaranteed; two slots are always available on any given date, even after the lottery. For example, if a new family with a child in your B'nai Mitzvah class joins the congregation, their child may be given a date which would change a "single" to a "shared" B'nai Mitzvah.
